POLICE RECOVER APPROXIMATELY 4,900 ROUNDS OF LIVE AMMUNITION IN LAMWO DISTRICT
Lamwo Police, through a community intelligence-led operation, have recovered approximately 4,900 rounds of live ammunition concealed in a garden at Otong Lawatpura Village, Ayuualali Parish, Palabek Kal Sub-county, Lamwo District.
The recovery was made on 26th July 2026 following information received from vigilant members of the community regarding suspected ammunition hidden in the area. A joint team comprising Lamwo Police, the Scene of Crime Officer (SOCO) and Crime Intelligence personnel proceeded to the scene to verify the information.
During the operation, a search was conducted in a garden belonging to Okot Mathew, a 67-year-old resident of the area, leading to the recovery of seven (07) metallic tins containing approximately 4,900 rounds of live ammunition.
Preliminary findings indicate that the ammunition is believed to have been concealed by the Lord's Resistance Army (LRA) during the insurgency in Northern Uganda over two decades ago. Initial examination further revealed that the recovered ammunition remained live and serviceable despite having been concealed for an extended period.
The recovered ammunition has since been safely secured and placed under Police custody pending technical examination and disposal in accordance with the established procedures.
The District Police Commander (DPC) Lamwo, SP Magombe Reagan, commended the community for their vigilance and timely sharing of information, noting that community cooperation remains critical in preventing crime and removing dangerous items from public circulation.
Police also sensitised members of the community on the dangers of handling, tampering with or transporting suspected ammunition, explosives and other remnants of war. Members of the public are urged to immediately report any such discoveries to the nearest Police station or any other security agency for safe recovery and disposal.
Crime Intelligence has commenced efforts to establish the origin and circumstances under which the recovered ammunition came to be concealed at the location. Further inquiries are ongoing under Ngomoromo SCPM Station SD Ref: 08/26/07/2026.
