Kwania NRM leaders Deny Allegations of Sabotaging LC2 Elections
The National Resistance Movement (NRM) party in Kwania District has denied allegations by Kwania District Woman Member of Parliament Kenny Auma that security officials and some party leaders sabotaged the recent LC2 elections.
Kwania District NRM Publicity Secretary Emmanuel Opio Okello dismissed the allegations, saying NRM leaders did not incite residents to cause chaos during the elections.
Okello said the elections were conducted peacefully and that the NRM secured victory in 37 of the 49 parishes, while the Uganda People’s Congress (UPC) won 10 parishes and independent candidates won two.
He said the MP’s responsibility is to represent the people of Kwania in Parliament.
However, while speaking in Parliament yesterday, Kwania Woman MP Kenny Auma accused election officials in Apire Parish of being influenced by security officials and some NRM leaders to manipulate the election results.
Auma specifically accused Kwania Deputy Resident District Commissioner (RDC) Aturu Abraham, Kwania District Police Commander (DPC) SP Kadoogo Paul, the NRM District Registrar and members of the NRM Workers League leadership of interfering with the electoral process.
She called for the transfer of the Kwania RDC and urged the Ministry of Justice and Constitutional Affairs to intervene to protect the democratic rights of residents.
Auma also cautioned against the use of government programmes such as the Parish Development Model (PDM), Emyooga and the cattle restocking programme as campaign tools.
Deputy Attorney General Jackson Kafuuzi expressed confidence that the Electoral Commission office in Kwania would investigate the matter and produce a report detailing what happened during the election.
North Kyoga Regional Police Spokesperson SP Patrick Jimmy Okema said the disturbances were caused by a group of people who allegedly influenced others to cause disorder and disrupt the election.
He said security personnel eventually managed to contain the situation and restore order.
Kwania District Police Commander SP Kadoogo Paul said that on Monday, supporters of the UPC arrived at the election venue wearing party colours and red-coloured items.
According to Kadoogo, the group later became disorderly and started fighting over a goat, leading to a confrontation with police. Four police officers and two other people were injured during the incident.
Kadoogo said five people were arrested in connection with the violence.
Those arrested included Patrick Oruru, 22, of Teopok; Ebong Tom, 51, of Alongomula; and Tonny Otim, 22, of Angolenyang in Apire Parish, Aduku Sub-county.
Police said efforts were continuing to trace the remaining suspects.
Three cases have been opened in connection with the incident: assault under SD No. 40/10/08/2026, malicious damage under SD No. 43/10/08/2026, and incitement to violence under GEF No. 13/2026.
The Kwania RDC was unavailable for comment at the time of filing this report, as he did not answer his phone.
According to the LC2 election results in Kwania District, the NRM won 37 of the 49 parishes and wards, while UPC won 10 and independent candidates secured two.
