Police boss Byakagaba tours Nsambya barracks

What the report says
Uganda’s Inspector General of Police, Abas Byakagaba, visited the Nsambya police barracks in Kampala on August 17 as part of an effort to improve officer welfare and strengthen the force’s operational capacity. According to The Observer, the inspection included meetings with officers and their families living at the facility, as well as senior police officials including health services director AIGP Dr Moses Byaruhanga and undersecretary Aggrey Wunyi.
During the tour, Byakagaba praised the police medical department for services it provides to people living around the barracks. He also said the force intended to address housing conditions, improve accommodation, refurbish schools inside the compound and build a perimeter fence. The article says he described Nsambya as a strategic site for housing and deploying personnel within Kampala Metropolitan Police.
A major focus of the visit was the police K9 Unit headquarters at Nsambya, where Commissioner of Police Dr Martin Mugume led the inspection. Byakagaba commended the unit’s training and breeding work and its role in detecting explosives and contraband, and in supporting investigations and court evidence. The broader significance of the visit is that it highlights continuing police efforts to balance welfare concerns with specialized operational readiness, especially in an environment where security agencies rely increasingly on technical units.
