Apac top NRM Party leaders banned from handling party funds over corruption

Four members of Apac District National Resistance Movement (NRM) Party executives have been banned from handling party finances after they failed to account for Shs 186 million 2026 elections campaign mobilization funds.

Talib Okabo, Apac District NRM party chairman, Daniel Eyit, the party secretary for publicity, Nyashima Robina Abwooli Assimwe, the party treasure and Bonny Ojaa, the party registrar who was also acting as the party administrator were the signatories to the party bank accounts and they have been accused of using the party funds for personal gains.

The extended district executives committee meeting held on July 17, 2026 in Apac Municipality resolved that they should be discharged off their mandate as the signatory to the party bank accounts after it was established that they withdrew Shs 186 million from the party bank account in Centenary Bank Apac Branch on January 13, 2026 and did not direct to its intended purpose.

Denis Hamson Obua, the national vice chairman NRM Party in charge of Northern Uganda who chaired the meeting directed police to further investigate the matter and the accused persons must stay away from the party finances.

“Having deliberated over the complaints and the allegations of mismanagement of the Shs 186 million sent to the NRM Party for vote protection in Apac District, it was recommended that fraud should be investigated by the police as they stay away from the finances of the party,” he said.

The party members also resolved that these people should not continue to be the signatory to the party bank account and other people be entrusted with the party finances.
“The current signatories to the NRM account for Apac District be temporarily discharged off their mandates and be replaced by the following; NRM vice chairperson Agnes Akello Ebong be the principal signatory, acting NRM administrative secretary Allan Okii, the co-signatory and Denis Ambrosoli Onapa, another co-signatory,” he added.

This move was welcomed by the party members and they have asked the police to follow up this matter to its logical conclusion.

Rodgers Akena, the NRM Publicity Secretary for Akokoro Sub-county in Apac District said that there has been massive mismanagement of the party funds in the district and they expect those involved to be prosecuted.

“I am very happy that these people are now caught but my worries is that it should not be another project of eating for those tasked to investigate and the case suffer natural death,” he said.

Luzino Odongo, the NRM Party chairman for Apac Municipality said that he was impressed by the decision and he believes it will bring to an end the mismanagement of party funds in the district.

“We don’t hate them but their problem is that they have maintained theft within the party. We tried to talk to them, we even took them to the RDC and to police but they refused,” he said.

Talib Okabo, Apac District NRM Party chairman denied misusing any fund adding that there were some people who have been fighting his leaders after defeating them during the internal elections.

“These are the group of people who have been opposing my leadership and they wanted me out of this position. I have handed over the issue of finance to them because they used to think that we eat a lot of money there,” he said.

Cases of theft of NRM Party fund has been so high in Lango Sub-region resulting into the arrest of many party leaders.

In July alone more than 10 NRM Party leaders in Lango Sub-region have been arrested and their cases are being investigated by police.

In Amolatar District three NRM Party leaders were held over alleged mismanagement of the LC1 election campaign fund and in Otuke District 10 NRM Party sub-county leaders were also detained over the same.

Isaac Opio Opeo, Otuke District Assistant RDC revealed that Shs 22 million part of the stolen money was recovered after the suspects agreed to refund the money they had stolen.
