Apac Municipality runs short of PLE examiners
Full report
Apac Municipality is facing a drastic reduction in the number of Primary Leaving Examination (PLE) examiners, a trend that headteachers warn could affect the quality of assessment.
Headteachers say most of the experienced examiners have retired, been promoted, or left the profession, while young teachers are not showing interest in applying.
“We are remaining with only a handful of examiners. We have only four examiners at the moment. One in Mathematics and Science, and two in Social Studies. We now don’t have that one of English Language,” Ben Omara, the chairperson Apac Municipality headteachers association lamented.
Being an examiner builds capacity, improves classroom teaching, and provides an extra source of income. It also helps the municipality maintain its academic standards.
Omara is now calling upon all young, qualified teachers in Apac Municipality to apply so that they are selected and trained.
“A teacher must have at least 3 years of teaching experience and a minimum of Grade III qualification to apply to UNEB to become examiners,” he added.
Molly Grace Akullu, Apac Municipality Senior Inspector of Schools pledged to provide the necessary support to the teachers willing to apply to become UNEB examiners.
“Do not wait. Go to your headteacher, get recommendation and apply online via the UNEB examiners portal. This is professional growth. In case you are stuck give me a call so that I can guide you,” she said during the release of Apac Municipality Mock Examination results on September 17, 2026.
Paul Odongo, a Mathematics teacher at Apac Model Primary School and the only examiner train in Mathematics said that his has helped him gained more knowledge and experience in setting and marking this subject.
“When I was admitted to become an examiner, I went through a series of trainings which has helped me to understand the subject and it make it easy for me to teach the subject,” he said.
UNEB applications for examiners are usually open between January and March every year on the UNEB portal.
In the 2025 PLE results Apac Municipality didn’t performed so well. Out of 892 candidates registered 28 passed in division one and 203 failed.
Out of 758 candidates registered 33 scored division one, 253 in division two, 113 in divisin three , 161 in division four and 195 in division U while 6 were absent.
