What the report says

Ambrose Byona, better known as Omunyeto, is planning a return to competitive rallying after more than seven years away from the sport, according to The Observer. He outlined his comeback during the KCB UMC Rwenzori Region Rally 2026, where he was involved as a route opener and car zero for organisers UMC rather than as a competitor.

The report says Byona wants a full-season run in the 2027 National Rally Championship, campaigning in a Mitsubishi Evo X. He also said he hopes to add a short-boot Toyota Yaris Proto later in the comeback project, with a possible introduction around August 2028. The story places his earlier rally background with Desh Rally Team and notes that he has driven several Mitsubishi models over the years, moving from an Evo IX to the current Ralliart-prepared Evo X.

Beyond his own return, Byona is also looking to involve his son, 19-year-old Zac Byona, in motorsport through autocross. The article says the younger Byona is expected to start in a Mitsubishi Evo X previously owned by the late Rajiv Ruparelia. The comeback effort is expected to operate under the Omunyeto Rally Team, with sponsorship said to include Yaobai Cement, Karamoja Cement, Lato Milk, Jonard Investments and Kabango Coffee.

The Observer’s coverage also noted the wider rally scene at Rwenzori, where Duncan Mubiru won NRC5 and the championship is set to move next to the Bunyoro region for the Kabalega Rally later in November 2026.
