Keeper Owono 'would never intentionally hurt anyone'

What the report says
Andorra goalkeeper Jesus Owono has been defended by his teammate Lautaro Spatz after the death of Tenerife forward Jesus de Miguel, with Spatz saying Owono would never deliberately injure another player and is deeply distressed by what happened. BBC Sport reports that the fatal incident occurred during a Spanish second-division match on Monday, when Owono and De Miguel collided in stoppage time as both sides were level at 2-2. De Miguel, who was 30 and had joined Tenerife in 2025, later died after being taken to hospital.
The match was abandoned after Owono was sent off. BBC Sport also reported that police in Spain opened a routine investigation, as is standard when a death is considered non-natural under Spanish law. Owono, who has 47 caps for Equatorial Guinea, has since deactivated his Instagram account, and his national federation said he was experiencing profound grief.
Tenerife and the wider football community have been mourning De Miguel, with tributes across European games and a minute’s silence held this week. The club has announced six days of official mourning, suspended activities, and plans for players, staff and officials to attend his funeral in Navahermosa, Toledo. The club will also open its stadium to supporters for a farewell on Saturday.
