What the report says

President Yoweri Museveni has paid tribute to the late veteran actor and theatre practitioner Alex Mukulu, praising him as a major figure in Uganda’s theatre and wider creative industry. According to Nile Post, the president’s message was delivered by Minister Henry Tumukunde during Mukulu’s funeral, where condolences were also extended to his family, colleagues in the arts, and the broader creative sector.

Museveni said Mukulu’s work in acting, writing, performance, mentorship and theatre helped shape Uganda’s cultural heritage. He argued that storytelling and artistic expression do more than entertain, saying they also help preserve a nation’s history, identity, values and hopes for the future. The president urged mourners to remember the impact Mukulu had on the people he trained and inspired, rather than only his physical absence.

The message also linked Mukulu’s legacy to the government’s broader push to support the creative economy. Museveni said the sector is important for employment, innovation and private-sector growth under the National Development Plan Four and the 10-fold growth strategy. Nile Post reported that about Shs18.99 billion had been disbursed by December 2025 through 50 artist circles, reaching around 3,000 people, though the president said questions remained about how effectively those circles support content production.

Museveni urged younger artists to follow Mukulu’s discipline, integrity, faith and service, and to measure success by their contribution to others as well as fame or money.
