Truck and Bus Drivers Blame Govt for Rising Road Accidents

What the report says
Transport leaders in Uganda are blaming weak enforcement, limited professional training and poor working conditions for the country’s rising road crash problem, according to Nile Post. Truck and bus drivers under the Union of Transport Alliance say existing road safety laws are not being applied consistently, and that efforts to reduce accidents will fall short unless authorities also address the pressures facing motorists.
The discussion took place at a meeting of transport group leaders, including boda boda riders, taxi and bus operators, and truck drivers, held to consider sector challenges and road safety measures. The meeting came as police stepped up enforcement after several crashes were reported in recent weeks across the country. The drivers argued that heavier penalties alone will not solve the problem if wages remain low and working conditions stay difficult.
Bus drivers’ chairperson Umaru Kakaire said stronger implementation of existing laws is needed, while also calling for specialised training schools for heavy vehicle and passenger drivers. Truck drivers’ chairperson Hassadu Sentongo Musis made similar remarks, saying measures already known to improve road safety have not been properly put into practice. The group also backed a standard minimum wage for drivers, especially for buses and heavy trucks.
The drivers said financial strain, including loan repayments, can push motorists to work long hours or take risks. As part of broader welfare efforts, the transport leaders also launched Ruka Pay, a platform meant to support drivers with services and assistance.
