Aponye focuses on governance, market diversification to revive business

What the report says
Aponye (U) Limited is rebuilding its business around stronger corporate governance, steadier operations and wider market reach after financial strain following the death of founder Apollo Nyegamehe, according to The Independent Uganda. The Kampala-based company works in grain aggregation, storage, processing, transport and distribution, and says it wants to restore confidence among creditors, suppliers, customers and financiers while remaining active in Uganda’s agricultural value chain.
The recovery plan is being led by a board chaired by Silajji Baguma Kanyesigye and a management team headed by Managing Director Annet Twebaze. The company says it is shifting from a more informal, relationship-driven approach toward formal systems, clearer stakeholder management and tighter internal controls. Leadership says the immediate focus is stability before expansion, with efforts to rebuild brand trust and improve accountability across the business.
Aponye also plans to diversify beyond its traditional institutional buyers by competing more strongly in commercial markets. The company says its integrated grain-handling infrastructure remains an advantage because it can collect produce from farmers, process and store it, then deliver it to large buyers, including government agencies, humanitarian groups and private manufacturers. It is also working with partners to train farmers and improve produce quality.
The article places the turnaround in a wider agricultural context: Uganda’s sector still faces post-harvest losses, limited storage and costly credit. Aponye argues that better preservation, logistics and financing are essential both for farmers’ incomes and for food security.
