What the report says

The New York Post reported that a series of foodborne illness investigations has heightened consumer concern in the U.S., with Cyclospora, E. coli and Listeria outbreaks drawing attention from federal health officials. The report said the CDC has counted 1,645 Cyclospora cases and 141 hospitalizations since May 1, with Michigan described as the hardest-hit state and New York among other affected states. Investigators have focused on lettuce in Michigan, while the source in other states remains unclear.

According to the Post, the FDA is also examining whether Taylor Farms has any connection to the Cyclospora outbreak after a positive test was withdrawn and later considered false. Separately, an E. coli outbreak has been tied to recalled GreenWise organic frozen blueberries sold at Publix, while a Listeria outbreak has been linked to recalled soft cheeses sold by La Ceiba Foods Latin Market, Nelson & Isa Lacteos and Clover Hill Dairy products. The Post cited CDC figures showing 12 Listeria illnesses, 10 hospitalizations and one death as of June 26.

Food safety experts told the Post that lower-risk choices generally include foods that are heat-treated, shelf-stable, canned, dried, acidic or low in moisture. Examples listed included dry pasta, oats, cereal, crackers, pretzels, bread, sugar, salt, honey, cooking oils, vinegar, canned soups and proteins, boxed shelf-stable milk and pasteurized dairy.

The report also noted an important caveat: parasites and viruses do not grow in food the way bacteria can, so contamination on fresh produce may still occur through water or handling. Experts advised cooking when possible, while cautioning that most foods are not contaminated at any given time.
