Trefis reported that Tesla’s second-quarter results triggered a sharp stock selloff despite revenue coming in above Wall Street expectations. According to the publisher, Tesla posted sales of about $28.2 billion versus a consensus estimate of $26.2 billion, but earnings of $0.33 per share were well below the $0.51 analysts had expected. The stock fell 14.5% on the first trading day after the report, a move Trefis said was far steeper than declines in the broader market and several auto peers.

The analysis argued that investors focused less on the revenue beat and more on profitability and cash flow. Trefis said Tesla’s net margin had dropped to 3.7%, compared with a three-year average of 8.7% and a prior peak of 15.5%. It also cited a decline in automotive margin excluding regulatory credits, from 19.2% to 16.3% in one quarter, based on the company’s account.

Trefis said the pressure reflected spending choices rather than only a weak quarter. Free cash flow turned negative after capital expenditures more than doubled from the previous period, while management guided to more than $25 billion in spending this year and further outlays over the next two to three years. The article said Tesla has arranged debt facilities of up to $30 billion to help fund projects including Optimus, robotaxi, AI compute, a semiconductor fab and solar manufacturing.

The publisher also noted signs of demand strength, including record second-quarter deliveries, the largest order backlog since 2023, strong paid FSD subscription attachment in North America and a 53% sequential rise in energy storage deployments. Trefis framed the key issue as whether Tesla can stabilize automotive margins and return free cash flow to positive territory while funding long-term autonomy and robotics ambitions.
