State House Youth Programme Targets 500 Beneficiaries Per Division to Fight Unemployment

What the report says
The State House is expanding its Youth Wealth Creation Programme, saying it aims to reach vulnerable and ghetto-based young people with practical skills, startup equipment and capital to help them build sustainable businesses. According to Nile Post, the initiative is set to target 500 beneficiaries in each administrative division as part of a wider effort to address unemployment and the economic hardship officials link to youth crime.
The programme, launched in 2022, is overseen by State House Controller Jane Barekye. It provides business tools, enterprise-management training and financial support to help young people start or grow small enterprises. The article says beneficiaries have received items such as tailoring machines, salon kits and woodworking equipment, with early rollouts reported in urban areas including Kamwokya and Lubaga.
The State House says the intervention is designed to move participants from subsistence work into more commercially viable ventures. Programme materials quoted by the publisher say the training covers both starting a business and managing it after receiving support. The initiative is especially focused on underprivileged youth in densely populated communities where formal employment opportunities are limited.
Nile Post also notes that supporters see the programme as a partial response to unemployment rather than a complete solution. In general, youth employment schemes in Uganda often combine training, tools and small grants to encourage self-employment, but the effectiveness of such efforts depends on follow-up, market access and business survival.
