Sheff Utd could face points deduction after court ruling

What the report says
Sheffield United could face a points deduction after the High Court ordered the liquidation of COH Sports Bidco Limited, the company that bought the Championship club. BBC Sport reports that the business still owed about £35m on a purchase agreed in December 2024, and that the winding-up petition was brought by United World, the club’s former owners.
The hearing was brief, and CSBL was not represented. The former owners said they had tried to settle the dispute, while Sheffield United had not commented at the time of publication. The club’s ownership structure has become more complicated because shares were transferred in June into a separate US-based company, 1919 Partners LLC, which the BBC says is now the club’s parent company.
According to BBC Sport, the case does not trigger an automatic penalty because the insolvency involved a company linked to the club rather than the club itself. However, the English Football League said it would examine the situation and decide whether further action is needed, including any response under its insolvency rules. Those rules can allow the EFL board to impose a 12-point deduction in certain cases.
The issue matters because Sheffield United already received a points deduction in the 2024-25 season over unpaid transfer-related debts from the previous ownership. The BBC says the EFL and the Independent Football Regulator are still seeking more information as they assess the wider ownership changes and the impact on league integrity.
