Security withdraws from Among’s residence

Several security officers stationed at the Nakasero residence of former Speaker of Parliament Annet Anita Among were withdrawn, according to The Observer, in a move that followed a public announcement by Chief of Defence Forces Gen. Muhoozi Kainerugaba that President Museveni had forgiven her and ordered her release from house arrest. The paper reported that the change in deployment came after a period in which her home had been closely guarded by security personnel.

The Observer said the security presence had been reduced from Special Forces Command soldiers to Counter Terrorism Police officers and civilian-clothed men at the gate, although the exact instructions for the new arrangement were not clear. Among had reportedly been under house arrest while security agencies examined allegations including corruption, abuse of office, money laundering and illicit wealth accumulation. The report also said raids had previously taken place at properties linked to her in Nakasero, Kigo, Ntinda and Bukedea, and that her bank accounts were reportedly frozen.

The article placed the development in the context of a political dispute over the parliamentary speakership earlier in the year, after Among allegedly resisted pressure to withdraw from the race. It also noted that wider investigations into parliamentary resources had already led to arrests and charges against several senior officials over the alleged misuse of about Shs 37 billion.

Among later thanked Museveni and Muhoozi publicly, saying she was grateful for her freedom and intended to resume her duties as Bukedea Woman MP. Muhoozi, as quoted by The Observer, said she would not be prosecuted.
