Rwanda: New Bugesera Road Cuts Freight Time, Opens Up Trade Opportunities

The report says the road forms part of the wider 123-kilometre Ngoma-Nyanza upgrading project, which includes phased works on the Ngoma-Ramiro and Kibugabuga-Gasoro sections. It connects eastern and southern Rwanda more directly to the Kigali-Huye highway and supports traffic linked to the Central Corridor, a major transport route through Tanzania to the Port of Dar es Salaam and inland countries including Rwanda.

Beyond freight, the improved road is already affecting local transport and commerce. Farmers, bicycle transporters and small traders in Bugesera are using the better surface to move produce such as bananas and avocados more quickly and at lower cost, while residents say travel times have fallen and access to markets has improved. Local officials and private-sector representatives cited new possibilities in logistics, agriculture, housing, tourism and roadside services, including restaurants and fuel stops, as connectivity improves around Bugesera and the planned international airport area.
