Rwanda: New Bugesera Road Cuts Freight Time, Opens Up Trade Opportunities

The upgrade helps drivers bypass congestion in Kigali and is part of a broader road project linking districts across the Eastern and Southern provinces.

The article says the route is being delivered in phases within the wider 123-kilometre Ngoma-Nyanza upgrading program, including the Ngoma-Ramiro and Kibugabuga-Gasoro sections. It is intended to improve movement of goods and people along the Central Corridor, which connects Rwanda to Tanzania and the Port of Dar es Salaam. Truck drivers quoted in the report said the new route reduces travel time, while local transporters said it is already making trips easier and cheaper.

Beyond long-distance freight, the improved road is affecting daily commerce in Bugesera. Farmers, bicycle transporters and small traders are using the smoother surface to move produce such as bananas and avocados to market more efficiently, with some residents saying they can make more trips in a day. The report also notes that better access is drawing more buses, vehicles and business interest to nearby sectors and could support logistics, agriculture, housing, tourism and agro-processing.

The project has broader context as part of Rwanda’s efforts to strengthen transport links and prepare for growth around Bugesera, including the planned international airport in the district, according to the report.
