Police Seal Off PFF Offices Ahead of Besigye, Lukwago Bail March

Police deployed heavy security around the People’s Front for Freedom headquarters on Katonga Road in Nakasero on Monday morning, sealing off the area and limiting both vehicle and pedestrian movement. According to Nile Post, the operation involved police and anti-riot personnel stationed around Plot 6 ahead of a planned procession by PFF leaders and supporters.

The march was intended to begin at the party’s offices and proceed to the Office of the Chief Justice, where the group planned to petition the Judiciary over the continued detention and health of Dr Kizza Besigye and former Kampala Lord Mayor Erias Lukwago. The party was seeking medical bail and urging action on what it described as urgent health concerns.

Nile Post said Besigye has been in detention since November 2024 after being arrested in Nairobi and later brought to Uganda, where he first faced military charges before the case moved to civilian court following a Supreme Court ruling limiting military trials for civilians. He is now on trial for treason, a charge he denies. The report also noted that Besigye collapsed at a court session in July and was later returned to Luzira Prison after treatment.

Lukwago faces a separate case linked to the same broader treason allegations and has also denied wrongdoing. His lawyers have previously sought bail on health grounds. The security deployment effectively disrupted the planned procession, underscoring the continuing political and legal tension around the two opposition figures.
