Police Register 66 Postponements in North Kyoga LC1 Elections As 97% Go Successfully.

Police in the North Kyoga region have registered 66 postponements of Village Local Council One elections across the Lango sub-region.

According to police, the exercise held on July 28, 2026 was largely peaceful. Violence and disruptions stemmed from complaints including irregularities in village voter registers, missing names, inclusion of alleged non-residents, alleged alteration of results on Declaration of Results forms, destruction of electoral materials, assault, incitement and other disputes.

The affected areas in all districts in the Lango sub-region have been rescheduled by their respective Returning Officers to 29th July 2026.

Amolatar District Elections in 8 villages postponed to July 29 due to irregularities.Apac District Recorded the largest cluster with 17 villages postponed. 16 are scheduled to vote on July 29. However, Ajo-Odur Village in Barodilo Parish, Teboke Sub-county will not vote on that date after its village voter register was destroyed during chaotic scenes. The Electoral Commission will conduct fresh voter registration there before setting a new election date.Otuke District 1 postponement out of 518 polling stations. 517 stations successfully conducted the LC I polls. Okere Village in Okere Parish, Adwari Sub-county experienced disturbances and was postponed to July 31.Kwania District 12 polling stations postponed to July 29 following complaints about irregularities in village voter registers. The district also recorded 7 arrests connected to election-related offences. Suspects were charged with malicious damage to property, specifically DR forms, assault, inciting violence, and forgery or alteration of election results. Case files are still under investigation.Lira City West Division 49 of 50 polling stations conducted peaceful elections. The only disruption was in Obutuwelo “B” Cell, where chaotic scenes were swiftly contained by deployed security personnel.Lira City East Division .The exercise was generally peaceful and orderly, with isolated incidents. The most notable was in Te-Obia Cell, where police registered a case of malicious damage to a government vehicle deployed for election operations. Two suspects, Ojok Isaac and Okumu, were arrested and are assisting police. Ojok was reportedly drunk at the time of arrest.Oyam District 3 polling stations out of 1,093 suspended LC I elections. The affected areas are Par-can-Ikweri Village in Okii Parish, Otwal Sub-county; Abanya “B” Cell in Kamdini Town Council; and Akongatar “D” Village in Iceme Sub-county. Disturbances were linked to forgery of results, damage to materials, vote rigging and assault.Kole District Recorded the highest number with 24 polling stations out of 590 affected. Disturbances were linked to missing names, inclusion of non-residents, assault, damage to DR forms and alleged vote rigging. Areas include Oluka Cell - Kole TC, Angwet, Obel, Agwata - Aboke, Bar Owok “B” - Alito TC, Tekulu - Apii Oguro, and Alipa Otkwach - Alito.

SP. Jimmy Patrick Okema, North Kyoga Police Spokesperson, confirmed that 97% of LC1 elections went successfully across the Lango sub-region despite isolated incidents of violence.

Okema said where violence erupted, the security team intervened to normalize the situation at the polling stations.

Preliminary findings indicate that NRM candidates won approximately 80% of the contested LC I chairperson positions. UPC candidates secured about 15%, Independents about 4%, and the remaining 1% was shared among FDC, PFF and NUP.

According to the statement, about 97% of polling stations where elections were postponed are expected to conduct the exercise on July 29. Others, including Okere Village in Otuke, are scheduled for July 31. A few villages, notably those where voter registers were destroyed, will wait for fresh registration and new dates to be gazetted by the Electoral Commission.
