PFF demands answers over Besigye treatment

The Independent Uganda, citing URN, reports that the People’s Front for Freedom (PFF) has demanded official explanations after opposition politician Dr. Kizza Besigye reportedly collapsed during his treason trial at the High Court Criminal Division in Kampala. PFF Deputy President Lulume Bayiga told journalists on Thursday that the government, the judiciary and the Uganda Prisons Service should account for what happened in court and disclose Besigye’s medical condition.

According to the report, the incident occurred a day after Besigye objected to the start of his trial, saying he had not had enough time to consult state-appointed lawyers following the court’s refusal to allow representation by counsel of his choice. The article says Besigye continued protesting as the prosecution’s first witness, identified as American national Andrew Wilson, began giving evidence, before he collapsed in the dock. Proceedings were later adjourned and Besigye was taken away by ambulance for treatment.

Bayiga alleged that prison officers restrained Besigye before he lost consciousness and that people present, including medical doctors, were blocked from assisting him. PFF also claimed Besigye was first taken to Mbuya Military Hospital and later transferred to the ICU at Mulago National Referral Hospital. The party called for access for his family, lawyers and colleagues, and asked the Chief Justice to review the conduct of the proceedings.

The Independent reports that High Court Judge Emmanuel Baguma adjourned the treason trial to August 4 after receiving a letter from Luzira Prison stating that Besigye was ill and could not attend court. The judge directed the Uganda Prisons Service to submit a medical report before the case resumes.
