TechCrunch reported that a fallen power line outside Washington, DC, exposed a grid-management risk tied to the rapid growth of data centers, especially in Northern Virginia. According to the report, the PJM Interconnection grid would usually recover from such a disruption within seconds, but this event took more than 10 minutes after more than 3 gigawatts of data center demand dropped off almost at once. Sensor data from Ting Labs indicated voltage spikes spread across PJM’s territory from Northern Virginia toward Chicago, causing regional light flickers but not a blackout.

PJM, the largest U.S. grid operator, manages electricity systems from New Jersey to Illinois and serves 67 million customers. TechCrunch cited PJM data showing roughly 3.1 gigawatts of load disappeared in about 30 seconds as data centers switched to backup power, with excess electricity peaking at 3.49 gigawatts before stabilizing about 11 minutes later. Reuters, cited in the article, said the disconnected data centers represented about 3% of PJM demand at the time.

Experts quoted by TechCrunch said the issue is likely to become more important as large computing loads cluster in the same regions. Ali Zain Banatwala of the Independent Electricity System Operator said neighboring facilities need ways to disconnect or reconnect in sequence rather than all at once. Ricardo de Azevedo, CTO of ON.Energy, described the incident as an early warning.

The report highlighted battery-backed systems as one possible fix. ON.Energy says it is installing 3 gigawatts of campus-scale uninterruptible power systems at four data center sites, designed to smooth demand and help facilities ride through voltage disruptions instead of abruptly leaving the grid.
