NRM Sweeps Luweero Village Polls

Nile Post reports that the National Resistance Movement (NRM) won a clear majority of LC1 chairperson positions in Luweero District, taking 394 out of 622 villages in the recently concluded village elections. The outlet cited official results released by district authorities, placing the ruling party’s share at 63.34 percent. Independent candidates were the next biggest group with 167 seats, while the National Unity Platform (NUP) won 60 villages.

The Democratic Party secured one village, according to the reported results. Other parties named in the report, including the Democratic Front, Uganda People’s Congress and Forum for Democratic Change, did not win any LC1 chairperson seats in the district. Nile Post said NRM posted notable results in Makulubita Sub-county, with 46 of 53 villages, as well as in Katikamu, Butuntumula and Bamunanika sub-counties.

Luweero District Returning Officer Moses Rwanks Kiconco said the polls were mostly peaceful, though complaints came from more than 30 villages over alleged irregularities. He said voting would be repeated only in Degeya Village in Kalagala Sub-county and Tweyanze Village in Wobulenzi, where the process reportedly failed. Complaints cited by the outlet included alleged obstruction of voters and bribery in some areas.

The LC1 elections were conducted by Uganda’s lining-up voting method and form part of the country’s local council electoral process. LC1 chairpersons are the lowest tier of elected local leadership and play a role in village-level administration, mobilization and community governance, making the Luweero results politically significant at the grassroots level.
