What the report says

State House officials have asked leaders in Greater Luweero to identify land for a proposed Presidential Industrial Skilling Hub, after President Yoweri Museveni directed that a new facility be set up in Luweero District. According to Nile Post, the hub is intended to serve young people from Luweero, Nakasongola and Nakaseke and to expand vocational training linked to employment and enterprise development.

The announcement was made by Eng. Raymond Kamugisha, director of Presidential Projects and Industrial Hubs at State House, during a meeting at the Mengo Presidential Industrial Skilling Hub in Kayunga District. He said the government views practical skills training as one response to youth unemployment and limited access to formal education. The hubs currently train beneficiaries in areas such as welding, carpentry, bakery, tailoring, hairdressing, shoemaking, and building and concrete practice, with additional courses proposed for electrical installation, knitting and weaving, automotive mechanics and plumbing.

The article says the meeting also focused on how graduates can move from training into work, including through SACCO financing and access to small contracts from local governments. Local leaders and hub representatives welcomed the plan, while urging young people to use the skills and support already available to them. Agnes Kirabo Nantongo offered land she had previously acquired for a skilling centre as a possible site, though officials said its suitability would still need to be assessed.

If completed, the Luweero hub would add to the State House skilling hub network, which the report says is being used to extend vocational training across several districts in central Uganda.
