Nigeria: Kano Varsity Disowns Viral Video On Emir Sanusi's Academic Performance

Northwest University Kano (NWUK) has rejected a viral video and accompanying social media posts that suggested Kano Emir Muhammadu Sanusi II had academic deficiencies at the institution. According to a statement cited by Vanguard and distributed by AllAfrica, the university said the material was false, baseless and misleading.

The university’s public relations office said the video actually showed the Emir attending a public lecture hosted at NWUK by the International Humanitarian Law Society. It said some online posts then added claims that he had a carry-over and had come to clear an alleged academic issue, but the university denied any such interpretation and distanced itself from the video and the write-ups.

NWUK urged students, staff and the public to ignore the claims and rely on official university communication for verified information. It also warned that anyone involved in creating or sharing defamatory falsehoods could be reported to authorities and prosecuted under applicable laws.

The report also noted that the Kano Emirate Council’s secretary had earlier told the News Agency of Nigeria that the allegation was false and unfounded. The episode highlights how quickly misleading content can spread around public figures and educational institutions, especially on social media, even when official statements are issued to correct the record.
