Nigeria: Kano Varsity Disowns Viral Video On Emir Sanusi's Academic Performance

Northwest University Kano has rejected a viral video that linked Kano Emir Alhaji Muhammadu Sanusi II to an alleged academic deficiency at the institution. In a statement issued Tuesday in Kano by university spokesperson Abubakar Ibrahim, the management said the claims circulating online were false, baseless and misleading.

According to the university, the video actually showed the emir attending a public lecture organized by the International Humanitarian Law Society at the campus. The university said some social media posts later attached text alleging that Sanusi had an academic carry-over and had gone to the school to clear it, but it said those assertions did not reflect its position.

NWUK urged students, staff and the wider public to ignore the video and accompanying write-ups, and warned against creating or sharing content it described as defamatory. It also said anyone involved could be reported to authorities and prosecuted under applicable laws.

The report noted that the Kano Emirate Council’s secretary had already told the News Agency of Nigeria that the allegation was false and unfounded. The episode highlights how quickly unverified claims can spread online around public figures, and why institutions often issue rapid denials to protect their reputations and correct the record.
