MP Bisaso Urges Government to Prioritise Electrification of Kassanda Mining Hubs

What the report says
Kassanda County South MP Abdul Bisaso has urged Uganda’s Ministry of Energy and Mineral Development to speed up rural electrification in Kassanda, with particular focus on mining areas that he says remain underpowered despite their economic importance. According to Watchdog Uganda, he raised the issue in Parliament during debate on the government’s rural electrification roadmap and argued that persistent electricity shortages are holding back local development.
Bisaso pointed to a transmission line from Kassanda to Karwana that he said was completed years ago but has not yet been commissioned. He described the delay as a missed opportunity for communities that still lack reliable power, even as parts of the district depend on mining and related activity for livelihoods. His remarks were made during the 18th sitting of the 1st meeting of the 1st session of the 12th Parliament of Uganda, chaired by the Speaker.
The lawmaker said connecting mining zones to the national grid would help increase production and could also support government revenue through broader industrial activity. Watchdog Uganda framed the appeal as part of wider criticism from rural legislators over slow delivery of energy projects and uncommissioned grid extensions. In general, rural electrification is often presented by Ugandan authorities as part of plans to support agro-processing, value addition and jobs, although the article itself focuses on Kassanda’s immediate infrastructure gaps.
