Luweero Police Arrest Two Over Suspected Electricity Wire Vandalism

Nile Post reported that police in Luweero District have arrested two people as part of an inquiry into suspected vandalism of electricity infrastructure. The case follows the recovery of three rolls of Solido electric wire during a joint operation at Mpande Village in Kalule Parish, Nyimbwa Sub-county. Police said the material is suspected to have been stolen from different places within the Savannah Region.

The suspects in custody were identified as Musa Mayembo, 20, and William Kiryowa. According to the report, two other people, named only as Isma and Juma and described by police as former UMEME workers in the Greater Luweero area, were still being sought. Savannah Regional Police spokesperson ASP Sam Twiineamazima said the operation was carried out by police and local leaders after information was received that suspected stolen wire was being kept in the area.

Police also seized a Toyota Starlet, registration number UAF 413X, and a motorcycle, registration number UGC 852V, which investigators suspect may have been used to move the recovered wire. Nile Post cited police as saying preliminary inquiries point to Mayembo’s home as an alleged collection point before the wire was transported to Kampala, while suspected buyers allegedly came from the capital to collect it.

The investigation is continuing to establish where the recovered wire came from, identify others who may be involved, and determine whether more stolen infrastructure can be recovered. Police appealed for public assistance through local leaders or nearby stations. The case matters because vandalism of power infrastructure can disrupt electricity supply, increase repair costs and create safety risks for communities.
