KCCA appeals for patience as crews clear massive waste collected during National Clean-Up Day

Nile Post reports that Kampala Capital City Authority (KCCA) has asked city residents to give its teams more time to remove the unusually large quantities of garbage generated during Saturday’s National Clean-Up Day. The authority says trucks are moving the waste to the Jjala Waste Management Site, but the scale of the collection has slowed turnaround times.

According to the report, KCCA Executive Director Hajjat Sharifah Buzeki said the clean-up produced more waste than expected, much of it from households and businesses where rubbish had built up over time. She said KCCA normally handles waste from public spaces, markets, schools and road-sweeping operations, while garbage from homes and commercial premises is primarily the responsibility of property owners.

Buzeki said KCCA crews had been deployed continuously to clear the piles and transport them for safe disposal, despite congestion and longer waits at the disposal site. She also credited KCCA concessionaires, government agencies and private contractors for adding trucks and logistical support to help manage the increased load.

The report adds that National Clean-Up Day will now be conducted monthly. Buzeki urged Ugandans to treat the exercise as a shared responsibility, linking it to efforts to improve sanitation, reduce public health risks and promote a cleaner urban environment. The development highlights Kampala’s continuing waste-management pressures, especially where household and commercial refuse is not regularly disposed of through formal systems.
