Iran attacks US bases in Middle East as Trump meets Netanyahu

What the report says
Al Jazeera reported that the US military said it intercepted multiple ballistic missiles launched by Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps at American forces in the Middle East on Wednesday, July 29, 2026. US Central Command said on X that the missiles were fired in an attempted surprise attack and that all were intercepted. Jordan’s state news agency reported five interceptions over Jordan, while the IRGC said it had targeted a US airbase and a Central Command site in Jordan with several ballistic missiles.
The strikes came as US President Donald Trump met Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu at the White House. Al Jazeera noted the timing against a backdrop of recent US-Iran hostilities: Trump had halted a two-week US bombing campaign on Iran on July 24 and said talks were progressing, while also warning strikes could resume if diplomacy stalled. Iran has denied seeking renewed talks with Washington. Analysts cited by Al Jazeera described the attack as an effort by Tehran to regain leverage and signal it must be included in discussions.
Al Jazeera also reported heightened tensions around the Strait of Hormuz. Citing Iran’s Tasnim news agency, it said the IRGC claimed it had “struck and stopped” three oil tankers after accusing them of ignoring warnings and using an unsafe route. Oman proposed joint management of traffic through the waterway, but Iranian Deputy Foreign Minister Kazem Gharibabadi said Tehran rejected an equal split of transit routes and instead proposed that Iran manage shipping on its side.
The developments matter because the Strait of Hormuz is a critical route for global energy shipments, and Al Jazeera reported oil futures rose after the US confirmed the Iranian missile attack.
