Al Jazeera reported that Jordan’s military said its air defences intercepted five missiles launched from Iran early Wednesday, July 29, 2026, amid what US Central Command described as an attempted surprise attack on American forces. CENTCOM said US troops remained on high alert. Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps said it had targeted Jordan’s Muwaffaq Salti Air Base and a CENTCOM facility, while Jordan said it would not accept threats to its security.

The escalation came hours after US President Donald Trump met Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu at the White House. Trump later warned in a Fox News interview that the US would respond forcefully. Al Jazeera framed the attacks as the latest flare-up since the US and Israel began strikes on Iran in late February, following Trump’s recent suspension of a 13-day bombing campaign that he said was paused because talks with Iran were under way.

Separately, Al Jazeera reported that joint US-Saudi strikes in Iraq killed at least 20 members of Iraq’s Popular Mobilisation Forces and wounded 32 others, according to the PMF. Saudi Arabia and CENTCOM said the strikes targeted Iran-backed militias accused of attacks on US troops and Saudi energy infrastructure. Iraq’s presidency condemned the strike on PMF facilities and said it opposed both attacks on Iraqi territory and the use of Iraq as a platform for attacks on neighbours.

Tensions also continued around the Strait of Hormuz. The IRGC said it struck and stopped three oil tankers, saying they ignored warnings over their route. Al Jazeera reported that Iran rejected an Omani proposal to split management of transit routes, instead proposing separate control of each side. Oil prices rose after the US confirmed the Iranian attack.
