How Burger King is preparing for the GLP-1 revolution - NBC News

What the report says
NBC News reports that Burger King is preparing for a possible shift in fast-food demand as GLP-1 weight-loss medications change how some Americans eat. In an interview in Miami for NBC’s “Business in America,” Tom Curtis, Burger King’s president for the U.S. and Canada, said he believes the drugs could have a major effect on the restaurant industry, even though the company has not yet seen a clear impact on its own sales.
According to NBC, Burger King is testing smaller or more protein-focused options, including Whopper Bites and protein-forward bowls, as it considers how to serve customers who may still want fast food but in smaller portions or with different nutrition priorities. Curtis said the chain is not trying to remake its identity, and cautioned against adding too much menu complexity before customer demand is clear.
The report places Burger King’s planning in a broader industry context. NBC cited a July Gallup poll finding that 11% of U.S. adults are currently using GLP-1 medications, and a National Restaurant Association survey in which nearly half of GLP-1 users said they had reduced dining out. NBC also cited William Blair survey data showing many GLP-1 users cutting back on hamburgers, and a JPMorgan estimate that GLP-1 adoption could reduce annual food and beverage industry revenue by $30 billion to $55 billion by as early as 2030.
Burger King’s preparations come alongside its “Reclaim the Flame” turnaround plan, which NBC said includes more than $2 billion for branding, restaurant remodels and menu upgrades. The company reported a 5.8% rise in U.S. comparable store sales in the first quarter, after a decline a year earlier.
