What the report says

KAMPALA — Uganda’s government has launched a Shs694 billion water and sanitation project intended to improve access to safe, reliable supply for more than one million people in Wakiso and Mpigi districts, according to Watchdog Uganda. The Wakiso West Water and Sanitation Project is being carried out through the National Water and Sewerage Corporation (NWSC) and is aimed at fast-growing communities facing pressure from rapid urban expansion.

The project will draw water from Lake Victoria at Bwerenga and is expected to serve places including Kyengera, Nsangi, Kajjansi, Kasanje, Kiringente, Wakiso Town Council and Mpigi Town Council, as well as settlements along the Entebbe Road corridor and parts of the wider Entebbe, Masaka and Mityana road area. NWSC managing director Silver Mugisha said the initiative is meant to ease longstanding shortages and intermittent supply linked to demand growth and limits in the current distribution network.

Watchdog Uganda reported that the works will include a treatment plant, transmission and secondary pipelines, reservoirs, pumping stations and a sanitation component. The plan also features hundreds of community water dispensers and prepaid yard taps in informal settlements, alongside a faecal sludge treatment plant and solar power installations at selected sites.

The publication said the project follows NWSC’s signing of a consultancy contract for detailed designs, tender preparation and supervision. It comes amid broader efforts to expand water coverage in Greater Kampala, where population growth has outpaced existing infrastructure. As reported, the investment is part of a wider push to improve public health and extend basic services to underserved urban communities.
