Former Rangers player Kyle Hutton to stand trial over road death

What the report says
Former Rangers midfielder Kyle Hutton has been sent for trial over a fatal road collision in Rutherglen, South Lanarkshire. According to BBC Sport Football, he is accused of causing the death of 40-year-old Victoria Cairns after an incident on Farmeloan Road on 2 November 2024. Cairns died in hospital four days later.
The BBC reports that Hutton, 35, denies the charges against him. Prosecutors allege he was unfit to drive through alcohol or drugs, was travelling too fast for the conditions, failed to spot the pedestrian and did not carry out proper observations. The case also includes allegations that he did not cooperate with breath and drug testing and did not provide two breath specimens as required.
An alternative allegation is that Cairns’ death resulted from careless driving rather than dangerous driving. Hutton, who played for Rangers between 2010 and 2015 and later represented clubs including St Mirren, Dumbarton and Partick Thistle, entered not guilty pleas through his defence counsel at a hearing in the High Court in Glasgow.
Lord Scott set a trial date for 7 February 2028, with the hearing expected to last about four days. Hutton remains on bail. The case is significant because it concerns the death of a pedestrian and the criminal process now moving toward a jury trial more than three years after the crash.
