Eckert will be happy when FA reaches Spygate verdict

Southampton head coach Tonda Eckert says he is aware of the Football Association’s pending decision over the club’s “Spygate” case, but is staying focused on pre-season work and the new campaign. In comments to BBC Radio Solent, the 33-year-old said the issue is “in the back of my mind,” while adding that he expects relief once the verdict is reached. The BBC report says Eckert was charged by the FA more than a week earlier for misconduct linked to authorising the observation of rival training sessions.

Southampton have already admitted spying on three clubs during last season’s Championship promotion push, a case that ended with them missing out on the play-offs. The FA said Eckert acted improperly and/or brought the game into disrepute. The club’s owner, Dragan Solak, previously said he would not sack the German coach, although that position could change if a significant suspension is imposed.

The report places the case against the backdrop of Southampton’s preparations for the new season. The team are in Germany for a training camp, have played several friendlies, and are due to finish their warm-up matches before a Carabao Cup tie and then their Championship opener at Watford. Eckert also said Southampton will target automatic promotion, suggesting the club want last season’s momentum, including their FA Cup run, to carry into the year ahead.
