Items stolen from Man Utd Munich air disaster memorial

What the report says
Items commemorating victims of the 1958 Munich air disaster were stolen from a memorial at Manchesterplatz in Munich, according to the Manchester Munich Memorial Foundation and German media cited by the BBC. The display case at the site was reportedly smashed, and local police believed the incident happened on Monday morning before early afternoon.
The BBC reported that four medals and a crystal trophy were among the objects taken from the glass case. The memorial marks the crash site where 23 people died, including eight Manchester United players, when the team was returning from a European Cup match in what was then Yugoslavia. The plane had stopped in Munich to refuel before the fatal takeoff attempt on 6 February 1958.
The foundation said it was deeply saddened by the theft, and its chair said the damage could not erase the memory or legacy of those who died. Manchester United reportedly offered to pay for repairs, but the foundation said it would cover the cost itself. A Bayern Munich supporters’ group that helps maintain the memorial acted quickly to replace the broken glass the same day.
The incident matters because the memorial is a shared place of remembrance for victims’ families and supporters of both clubs, and it highlights the continuing significance of the Munich disaster in Manchester and Munich.
