What the report says

Uganda Young Democrats (UYD), the youth wing of the Democratic Party (DP), have accused senior party leaders of misappropriating billions of shillings and are pressing for an investigation. According to Nile Post, the allegations are aimed at the DP leadership under President General Norbert Mao and include party money linked to the Inter-Party Organisation for Dialogue (IPOD).

The youth made the claims at a press conference in Mengo, saying funds meant for party operations were mishandled. Julius Dumba, identified as the DP spokesperson for Lubaga North, alleged that more than Shs4 billion intended for media work was improperly spent, and also pointed to money said to have been wasted during the Mbarara Delegates Conference. The group said it had written to the Inspectorate of Government on July 9, 2026, but was unhappy with the response.

Nile Post reported that DP Electoral Commission chairperson Kennedy Mutenyo urged the youth to use the party’s internal complaint mechanisms if they have evidence. The Inspectorate of Government also advised that the matter be reported to police, saying the DP is not a government entity and therefore falls outside the Inspectorate’s mandate. The youth have threatened legal action if the allegations are not addressed, adding pressure on the party leadership to account for the disputed funds.

The dispute highlights wider questions about accountability in political party financing and the handling of public funds distributed through IPOD, though the allegations have not been independently verified in the reported material.
