What the report says

Al Jazeera reported that hundreds of mourners gathered on Tuesday, July 28, 2026, at Washington National Cathedral in Washington, DC, for the funeral of late US Senator Lindsey Graham of South Carolina. Graham, a Republican and close ally of US President Donald Trump, died unexpectedly on July 11, according to the report.

Trump attended the service alongside Vice President JD Vance, Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent, Eric Trump and Lara Trump. Al Jazeera said Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, Finnish President Alexander Stubb and other international figures were also present. Images from the service showed Netanyahu speaking with senior US officials, including Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth and Secretary of State Marco Rubio, while Zelenskyy was pictured with Stubb.

In remarks at the funeral, Trump described Graham as an influential figure in US and global politics and referred to him as a close friend. Al Jazeera reported that Trump credited Graham with being deeply involved in major debates in Washington and abroad during his decades in public office.

Graham was first elected to the US House in 1994 and won a Senate seat in 2002, later securing re-election in 2008, 2014 and 2020. He recently chaired the Senate Budget Committee and also served on appropriations, judiciary, and environment and public works panels. Al Jazeera noted his hawkish foreign policy record, including support for the 2003 Iraq invasion, pressure for action against Iran, strong backing for Israel, and support for Ukraine after Russia’s 2022 invasion.
