What the report says

Al Jazeera reported that hundreds of mourners gathered on Tuesday afternoon at Washington National Cathedral in Washington, DC, for the funeral of late US Senator Lindsey Graham of South Carolina. Graham, a Republican and close ally of President Donald Trump, died unexpectedly on July 11, according to the publisher.

Trump attended with Vice President JD Vance, Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent and members of the Trump family, and delivered remarks describing Graham as a major presence in US and global politics. Al Jazeera also reported attendance by Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, Finnish President Alexander Stubb and other leaders, underscoring Graham’s foreign policy profile.

Graham had served in the US Senate since winning election in 2002, after earlier representing South Carolina’s third congressional district in the US House from 1994. Al Jazeera noted that he had recently chaired the Senate Budget Committee and also served on the appropriations, judiciary, and environment and public works committees.

The funeral drew attention because Graham was a prominent Republican voice on national security and foreign affairs. Al Jazeera described him as a supporter of the 2003 US invasion of Iraq, a longtime advocate for Israel, a backer of Trump’s war on Iran, and a vocal supporter of Ukraine following Russia’s 2022 invasion.
