What the report says

Democratic socialist Nithya Raman has defeated incumbent Karen Bass in the Los Angeles mayor’s race, according to BBC World News. The result gives Los Angeles a new mayor after a contest that had been viewed as a test of how far left voters in the city were willing to go. BBC reported that Raman entered the race as a long-shot challenger before building support, especially among younger voters, and ultimately overcame Bass, a veteran Democrat and former member of Congress.

Bass conceded and said on social media that the people of Los Angeles had spoken, while also urging the city to move forward. Raman, who serves on the city council and is an Indian immigrant, campaigned on fixing what she described as a broken status quo. Her platform included reducing homelessness, expanding housing, protecting jobs in Hollywood, and addressing immigration enforcement concerns. She also spoke about basic city services, including roads, beautification and nightlife.

The race carried added significance because of the 2025 Los Angeles fires, which killed dozens of people and destroyed neighborhoods. BBC said Bass faced political fallout over her response to that emergency and her absence during it. The next mayor will also help guide the city ahead of the 2027 Super Bowl and the 2028 Summer Olympics. The result fits a broader pattern of gains for progressive Democrats in major US cities, with BBC noting that New York and Los Angeles will now both be led by democratic socialists.
