Trump met Russian envoy after he appeared with Melania Trump and Ukrainians

What the report says
US President Donald Trump met at the White House on Thursday with Kirill Dmitriev, the special envoy of Russian President Vladimir Putin, and again suggested that a Russia-Ukraine agreement could be near. Speaking to reporters in the Oval Office, Trump said he expected a settlement to come soon, but he did not provide details of what he discussed with the Russian envoy.
Al Jazeera reported that Trump also said the possible deal could involve more than Ukraine and might have wider implications for Europe. The comments came amid renewed diplomatic activity around the war, which has continued since Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine. Trump has repeatedly predicted that a breakthrough was close, although the article noted that negotiations have only recently picked up pace.
The meeting with Dmitriev followed a separate White House diplomatic event hosted by First Lady Melania Trump, who brought Russian and Ukrainian representatives together to highlight a limited ceasefire she helped broker in the southern Ukrainian city of Oleshky in October. According to the report, senior figures from both countries attended, including Ukrainian parliamentary human rights commissioner Dmytro Lubinets and Russian human rights commissioner Yana Lantratova. The White House said the gathering was the first time a first lady had personally brought representatives of two warring nations to the White House for diplomacy.
