Congolese national committed to High court over sneaking in $1.6m cash

A Congolese national working in Uganda as a cashier has been committed to the High Court to face trial over allegations that he brought $1.6 million into the country without declaring it to authorities. The Observer reports that Samuel Muhindo Musyenene, an employee of MK Cash Express Limited at MK-Cash Point in Nakasero Complex, Kampala, was sent to the High Court after prosecutors said investigations in the case had been completed.

According to the prosecution summary cited by the paper, Muhindo is accused of entering Uganda on July 4, 2026, through the Kikorongo-Mpondwe border area in Kasese district with $1,596,250 and failing to declare the cash to the Uganda Revenue Authority as required. Prosecutors say the amount was above the threshold for mandatory cross-border currency declaration under Uganda’s anti-money laundering rules. The court was also told that a bus carrying several Congolese nationals was stopped during a security operation, and that Muhindo later disclosed at a police station that two bags in his possession contained the money.

The case involves MK Cash Express, which the prosecution says helps move money between Uganda and the Democratic Republic of Congo, mainly for business clients. A supervisor, Joachim Kakule Kagheri, was also arrested during follow-up inquiries. Prosecutors say investigators did not link Muhindo, the cash or the company to subversive activity, but still maintain that the alleged failure to declare the funds amounts to an anti-money laundering offence. The case will now proceed in the High Court.
