Cardiff to host 2029 women's Champions League final

Uefa has confirmed that Cardiff’s Principality Stadium will stage the 2029 women’s Champions League final. According to BBC Sport Football, the 73,931-capacity venue will be renamed the National Stadium of Wales for the match to meet Uefa sponsorship rules. The announcement places Cardiff among a series of host cities selected for major European club finals over the next few years.

The BBC reported that the stadium previously hosted the 2017 men’s Champions League final, when Real Madrid beat Juventus, and that Cardiff City Stadium held the women’s final in 2017, with Lyon defeating Paris Saint-Germain on penalties after a goalless draw following extra time. The Principality Stadium also hosted the FA Community Shield earlier this year, highlighting its continued use for major football events.

Welsh football leaders welcomed the decision. FAW chief executive Noel Mooney described it as important for Cymru and for the development of the women’s game, while WRU group chief executive Abi Tierney said it was a significant moment for women’s sport in Wales and across Europe. The BBC said the event is being presented not only as a one-off final, but also as a possible boost to women’s and girls’ football in Wales.

Uefa also announced several other future final venues, including Munich for the 2028 men’s Champions League final and Lyon for the 2028 women’s final.
