Zimbabwe: Zimbabwe Sets Up Task Force to Tackle Illegal Mining After Bindura Damage

AllAfrica, carrying a New Zimbabwe report dated 29 July 2026, reported that Zimbabwe’s Cabinet has approved the creation of a national task force aimed at curbing illegal mining. The decision followed a presentation at Tuesday’s Cabinet meeting by Local Government Minister Daniel Garwe on damage linked to unregulated mining in Bindura, north-east of Harare.

According to the report, an assessment in Bindura Municipality and Bindura District Council found illegal and poorly controlled mining taking place in residential zones, public infrastructure corridors and land earmarked for future urban growth. The activities were said to have damaged roads, railway infrastructure, housing stands and public facilities. The report also cited alluvial gold panning along waterways, including the Mazowe River, as a source of disruption to farming and contamination of water sources.

Garwe told Cabinet that mining had expanded quickly in urban and peri-urban areas without sufficient planning or coordination between state agencies, according to New Zimbabwe. The report also linked the situation to public health and social concerns, including silicosis, tuberculosis, drug and substance abuse, and sexually transmitted infections.

Cabinet’s response is described as a “Whole-of-Government” approach, with the task force intended to coordinate action against illegal mining. The government also plans to review fines and penalties for illegal mining offences, with tougher sanctions and stronger enforcement of existing laws under consideration. The development matters because informal and unregulated mining remains a recurring governance, environmental and public safety challenge in Zimbabwe’s gold-producing areas.
