What the report says

Zimbabwe’s Meteorological Services Department has warned that thunderstorms, heavy rain and possible hailstorms are expected across the country this week, with the weather system set to move from the south and west toward northern and eastern provinces. The advisory, issued with the Department of Civil Protection and reported by 263Chat, said storms were forecast to start in parts of Matabeleland North and South, Bulawayo, Midlands, Masvingo and southern Manicaland before spreading farther north by Thursday.

Authorities said some areas could see localized downpours that raise the risk of flash flooding, especially in low-lying places, near rivers and in cities. The public was urged to take precautions against lightning, strong winds and floodwater, including staying indoors during storms, avoiding shelter under trees or near tall poles, and delaying unnecessary travel where possible.

The warning also highlighted possible effects on farming. The MSD said wet conditions could disrupt crops at grain-filling and maturity stages, reduce grain quality and encourage fungal disease. Farmers were advised to provide livestock with shelter, bedding and feed, while households were told to secure rooftops, loose items and overhanging branches. The department also urged communities to protect drinking water to reduce the risk of waterborne disease and to keep following official weather updates.
