Zimbabwe: Health Ministry Recalls Two Batches of Hypertension Medicine Nifedipine

Zimbabwe’s Ministry of Health and Child Care has confirmed a recall of two batches of Nifedipine 10mg tablets, a medicine used to treat high blood pressure and some heart-related conditions. The recall concerns batches 112033 and 117367 of the product made by Remedica Ltd, according to a public notice reported by New Zimbabwe and relayed through AllAfrica.

The ministry said the action followed routine quality monitoring and post-market surveillance by the Medicines Control Authority of Zimbabwe (MCAZ). It also said the MCAZ notice circulating online is genuine, appearing to address concerns that had spread on social media and messaging platforms.

Patients who use Nifedipine have been asked to check the batch number on their packaging. Those who have tablets from either affected batch are advised to return them to the pharmacy or health facility where they obtained the medicine for further help. The ministry cautioned patients not to stop or alter prescribed treatment based only on online messages, and instead to consult a qualified health professional or contact MCAZ if they are unsure whether their medicine is affected. The recall matters because Nifedipine is a commonly used hypertension treatment, and the notice is part of broader drug-safety oversight in Zimbabwe.
