What the report says

Binance, the world’s largest cryptocurrency exchange, says it is trying to recover funds after a major cyber-attack that left about $6.3bn in digital assets exposed. According to BBC World News, the company said roughly half of the stolen money — about $3bn — had been frozen, while a large portion remained under the control of unidentified hackers. The incident is being described as a complex breach and is believed to be the largest theft of its kind.

The exchange first thought the attack may have begun with a compromised employee laptop, but later said the intrusion was broader than initially understood. Binance co-CEO Richard Teng said the investigation suggested more than one point of breach and that the attackers used methods designed to erase traces and slow detection. The company temporarily suspended deposits and withdrawals before later saying deposits were unaffected.

Several blockchain analytics firms have linked the theft to a North Korean hacking unit, and BBC World News reported that investigators see similarities with earlier incidents attributed to groups such as Lazarus Group. The US Secret Service said it was working to identify, freeze and trace the stolen funds, while Binance said it was cooperating with the FBI. The case matters because it raises fresh concerns about security in the crypto sector and about whether large exchanges can absorb losses of this scale while protecting customers.
