What the report says

Four members of the Zimbabwe National Army were killed and three others were injured in a road accident on Friday along the Harare-Mutare highway, according to a report carried by New Zimbabwe and distributed by AllAfrica. The soldiers were said to be travelling in a military vehicle from Harare toward Mutare when the crash happened at the 45-kilometre peg on the route.

The article identified the dead as Warrant Officer Class 1 Philimon Chamisa, Warrant Officer Class 2 Chindowa Lydia, Sergeant Mundicho Wellington Wonder and Lance Corporal Mupemhi Edmore. It said the four died at the scene. The injured were taken to hospital for treatment, with two admitted to Marondera District Hospital and one transferred to the 2 Referral Hospital at Josiah Magama Tongogara Barracks.

The ZNA said it was grieving with the families, friends and colleagues of the soldiers and wished the injured a full recovery. Authorities have opened an investigation to determine what caused the crash. Burial arrangements for the deceased were said to be pending further announcement.

The incident underscores the risks of road travel for military and civilian transport on major intercity routes in Zimbabwe, though the report did not provide further details on the cause of the collision.
