Zayed Sustainability Prize’s Beyond2020 Initiative Strengthens Healthcare Resilience for Over 200,000 People in India

CleanTechnica, publishing a press release dated July 27, reported that Beyond2020, an initiative of the UAE’s Zayed Sustainability Prize, has completed a deployment of six solar-powered health facilities in rural Karnataka, India. The project is described as supporting more reliable healthcare access for over 200,000 people in communities where electricity and health infrastructure can be limited.

The deployment was implemented by SELCO Foundation, an India-based nonprofit and 2018 Zayed Sustainability Prize winner that works on sustainable energy solutions for poverty alleviation. According to the report, the facilities use solar photovoltaic systems rated between 2 and 15 kilowatts at peak sunlight, paired with off-grid equipment and lithium-ion battery storage designed to provide about 1.5 to two days of power.

The health centres include energy-efficient medical equipment intended to support maternal and neonatal care, immunisation, diagnostics and remote consultation. Listed technologies include baby warmers, phototherapy units, foetal monitors, assisted ventilation devices, vaccine carriers, digital stethoscopes, spirometers, telemedicine units, digital microscopes and tele-dermatology tools. SELCO Foundation also worked with Swami Vivekananda Youth Movement to deploy a mobile health clinic for remote communities.

The report frames the project as part of a broader effort to address healthcare barriers in remote parts of India, where unreliable power can affect vaccine storage, diagnostics and other essential services. CleanTechnica said Beyond2020 has now carried out 19 deployments across energy, health, water and food-related sectors in multiple countries, with Colombia identified as the next deployment location.
