Yemen’s Houthis launch ballistic missile attacks on al-Makha and Marib

Yemen’s internationally recognised government said Houthi forces fired ballistic missiles at the Red Sea port city of al-Makha and at residential areas in Marib on Monday, according to Al Jazeera’s report. The government did not say whether the latest strikes caused casualties. The attacks followed a previous round of Houthi fire a day earlier on al-Makha, also known as Mocha, which the outlet said killed at least seven people and wounded 30, while damaging the port area.

Al Jazeera reported that a separate Houthi drone attack in Yemen’s south-central province of Shabwa killed two government soldiers and injured seven others. Government forces also said they hit Houthi positions in several other areas, including al-Jawf, Saada and central Marib, showing how the conflict has spread across multiple fronts.

The latest exchanges fit into a broader pattern of escalation in Yemen’s long-running war. The Houthis seized the capital, Sanaa, in 2014, prompting a Saudi-led intervention the following year. After a truce in April 2022 reduced major fighting, the conflict has again intensified, with the UN warning of a renewed risk of large-scale war and wider regional spillover. That context matters because attacks on key ports and populated areas can further disrupt civilian life, trade and already fragile humanitarian conditions.
