Mashable reported that Xtra has canceled reservations for its planned Xtra Muse 2 Pro gimbal camera and is refunding customers who paid $20 under an “Early Bird” preorder program. In a notice posted online and sent to customers, the company said it was pausing the program after reviewing product and launch readiness, and said it could not give a dependable launch timeline. Xtra is also offering affected customers a 10 percent coupon for existing products.

The cancellation comes amid heightened U.S. scrutiny of companies suspected of acting as workarounds for restrictions on DJI, the China-based drone and camera maker. Mashable noted that Xtra appeared last year with products resembling DJI devices, and that online researchers and outlets including The Verge have examined possible links or similarities between Xtra and DJI. Xtra’s Muse 2 Pro has drawn attention because of its resemblance to DJI’s Osmo Pocket 4 Pro, though the status of the product remains uncertain.

According to Mashable, the FCC recently opened investigations into eight companies, including Xtra, after they allegedly did not respond to earlier requests for information about whether their products should fall under banned-equipment rules. The regulator has imposed a $25,000 fine on each company and is also reviewing whether previously approved Xtra products could be barred retroactively.

Xtra has not said the FCC probe caused the preorder cancellations, citing only launch readiness. The development matters because U.S. restrictions on DJI have limited new product imports, leaving consumers and rival camera makers navigating an increasingly uncertain regulatory market.
